By Larry Rickard, Chief of Campus Safety
Campus Safety is committed to ensuring a safe environment in which to learn, live and work. As you begin the semester, remember that safety is a responsibility we all share.
Have fun and enjoy your new-found independence, but always take safety precautions on and off campus. Here are some tips:
On campus
- Keep your door locked at all times; don’t leave it propped open or leave notes on it stating you are away.
- Don’t lend out your room key; if it is lost or stolen report it to Campus Safety.
- Do not open the door for or admit strangers to your room or residence hall.
- Ask for identification of repairmen, and verify by telephone.
Out and about
- Do not walk alone at night.
- Be aware of your surroundings and walk only on sidewalks or streets.
- Don’t accept rides from strangers or hitchhike.
- If you get stranded, call a friend, a taxi or Uber or Lyft, Campus Safety or Safe Ride (from anywhere within a 10-mile radius) at 1-800-675-6349.
- Note that a shuttle is available from the H parking lot 6 p.m.–6 a.m.
At social gatherings
- Do not accept opened drinks, “shared’ drinks or homemade vats of mixed drinks.
- Don’t ever leave your drink unattended or drink anything with an unusual taste or appearance.
- Go home with the same group of people you went out with.
- If you begin to feel strange or overly intoxicated, seek help from a friend or someone you trust.
- Do not combine sex and alcohol. Alcohol impairs inhibitions, judgment and decision-making.
